NFL Network's Ike Taylor, a 12-year former NFL cornerback, chose the Dallas Cowboys starting CB duo as his latest "Ike's Island" segment. The two-time Super Bowl champion was critical but fair in his assessment of both Nolan Carroll and Orlando Scandrick.
Scandrick enters his ninth NFL season (all with the Cowboys) and he serves as one of the leaders of Rod Marinell's defense. The 5-foot-10 corner is solid in press coverage, tackles well and brings a lot of experience to the secondary. One thing that gets Scandrick in trouble, though, is his supbar transitions coming out of breaks.
Carroll, a first-year Cowboy, has all the intangibles needed to be an above average cornerback in the league, but he lacks the most important thing: consistency. He had a good 2016 campaign in Philly -- the only season he's made 16 starts in his seven-year career -- and hopefully, he can carry the confidence gained last year over to Dallas.
The Dallas cornerbacks are under a lot of pressure right out of the gate.Jr., who's battling an ankle sprain, and are huge talents on the perimeter, and 's Jarvis Landry-like skill level in the slot presents matchup problems for the ' secondary. The realize the ' pass catchers will get their catches, but they can only afford their cornerbacks to bend not break. Carroll and Scandrick must play close to Beckham, tackling him immediately after the catch to prevent him from breaking big plays. For this unit to have a successful outing, it can give up yards but only one touchdown.
Scandrick was recently named one of six team captains for the 2017 Cowboys. His peers clearly have a high level of respect for him. He's played for Dallas since 2008, missing the entire 2015 sason to injury. Over eight NFL seasons he's racked up 368 tackles, eight picks and 11.5 sacks.
Carroll is a free agent signing from the Philadelphia Eagles. The 30-year-old entered the NFL in 2010 with Miami and has made 278 career tackles, eight picks and three sacks.
The Cowboys take on Odell Beckham Jr. and the New York Giants on Sunday Night Football. Can't wait!
