In a piece of tragic news, a young football player has lost his life today in an extremely unfortunate accident.
AL.com has reported, Alabama A&M football player Danny Johnson was killed in a car accident Thursday morning outside of Scottsboro, Ala. The 20-year-old sophomore defensive back was pronounced dead at the scene after the car he was riding in collided head-on with a truck. It is reported that he was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident. According to Huntsville, Ala., television station WAAY, Johnson's girlfriend was transported to a nearby hospital.
"It is with great sadness that we share the tragic news of Danny's passing. He and his brother DeVon were two of our first signees," coach James Spady said. "Danny was an important member of our football family and a fine student. We ask everyone to join us in prayer for his family and keep them in your thoughts in this time of sadness."
Johnson was a two-year starter for the Bulldogs along with his twin brother, DeVon. He was second on the team with 30 tackles last season. He also broke up four passes and a blocked a kick.
"This is a tragic loss for the Alabama A&M University family," A&M director of athletics Bryan Hicks said in a statement. "Danny was a fine young man, a hard worker on the field and off. Our condolences go out to the Johnson family."
