As if we already knew the Arizona Cardinals season was over when star running back David Johnson went down, we now have ultra-confirmation.

ESPN reports that quarterback Carson Palmer will have surgery to repair his broken left arm when the team returns home. The three-time Pro Bowler could miss anywhere between eight weeks and the rest of the season, coach Bruce Arians said Sunday night after a 33-0 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

Drew Stanton, who finished 5-of-14 for 62 yards and an interception in place of Palmer, will take over as the Cardinals' starter, Arians confirmed.

"We played with Drew before, you know," Arians said. "We have lost him long. Drew has played and won a lot of games for us. "All the confidence, he and Blaine (Gabbert) stepped up and take over the quarterback job."

Arians said he won't consider playing Gabbert ahead of Stanton, who's 6-3 starting in place of Palmer since they became teammates in 2013. Stanton was 5-3 in 2014, when Palmer missed 10 games with a shoulder and knee injury, noted ESPN. Stanton missed the last two games that season with his own knee injury.

Things didn't go too well for Stanton when he came into the game:
