We have some very sad news to share on this Sunday.

According to a report from Wes Wilson of KXAN News former National Football League standout Cedric Benson has tragically died at the young age of 36. Although we still do not know the full details regarding the incident, it is now believed that the former NFL running back was riding his motorcycle on Saturday night when he was involved in a fatal crash.

According to KXAN Austin police responded to the crash at the 5600 block of Mt. Bonnell Rd. around 10:20 p.m on Saturday night where it is believed that the motorcycle carrying Benson was struck by a mini van attempting to cross an intersection. At this time it is unclear who was responsible for the incident, but regardless of where the responsibility falls Benson has paid an extremely heavy price. Unfortunately the former NFL player was not the only person injured in this incident as there was also a female passenger on his motorcycle, both Benson and the female were pronounced dead at the scene.

Benson of course first made a name for himself while playing high school ball at Midland Lee where he was recognized as one of the top young prospects in the country. He would then go on to put up 5,540 yards for the Longhorns at the University of Texas before eventually being drafted by the Chicago Bears 4th overall at the 2005 NFL Entry Draft.

Benson would also go on to play for the Cincinnati Bengals for several years before eventually finishing off his NFL career as a member of the Green Bay Packers, a team he had battled for many many years prior. Throughout his career Benson would appear in a total of 96 NFL games, rushing the ball a whopping 1,600 times for 6,017 yards and 32 touchdowns. He would also add plenty of yardage through the air with 120 career receptions for 833 yards and a touchdown as well.

Obviously to have his life taken at just 36 years old is an absolutely tragedy and our thoughts and condolences go out to Benson's family as well as to the family of the second victim who has yet to be identified at this time.
