There have been rumors for several weeks now, and I have to be perfectly honest those rumors have done nothing to dull the shock I feel this morning as I write this article. One of the National Football League's best players, one of the best players of this generation has retired.
According to a report from the NFL Network's insider Ian Rapoport, the Lions have officially announced that wide receiver Calvin Johnson is hanging it up and calling it a career after nine incredible season as NFL player. It's hard not to look back on what could have been for Johnson had he not spent the entirety of his career as a member of the often under-achieving Detroit Lions, although it's almost just as hard to picture the Lions without Megatron.
Johnson will end his career with some incredible numbers including 731 catches, 11, 619 yards, and 83 touchdowns in just 135 games played as a NFL receiver. Johnson was also a six time Pro Bowl selection, consistently distinguishing himself even when the Lions were at their worst.
We wish him nothing but the best in all his future endeavours.
