It can be hard to decide which young talents to gamble on, and which to cut loose. You can only keep so many players on your roster however, and the Steelers have been forced to release some promising talent today.
With the announced signings of rookie quarterback Bart Houston and wide receiver Canaan Severin, Pittsburgh had to release two players to stay under the 90-man roster limit.
Linebacker Akil Blount and quarterback Nick Schuessler were the two players who had to bite the bullet, and are now available free agents.
Blount looked promising playing for Florida A&M in college, but has failed to make an NFL roster two years in a row. He was signed, and waived by Miami in 2016, and signed with the Steelers on February 14th, 2017. He has yet to play a game in the NFL.
Schuessler finished up his time with Clemson Tigers at Clemson University in 2016. He had modest stats across his four seasons there, and went undrafted this year. He was given a shot with the Steelers, but didn’t make the cut this season.
