It was one of the more startling changes to the quarterback position by a franchise in recent memory, as the Pittsburgh Steelers have a completely new look featuring Russell Wilson and Justin Fields after having traded Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles and let Mason Rudolph and Mitchell Trubisky depart via free agency.
Making an appearance on the popular "Up and Adams" show with host Kay Adams, it was defensive stalwart Cam Heyward who explained he was one of the first new teammates of Wilson to welcome him to Pittsburgh and give him the layout of the land.
“I was out at a conference in Arizona,” Heyward said. “And then I came back to my room and me and Russ just talked for about two hours. We talked ball. I know he was having conversations with the Steelers. The main thing I did told him was just, this isn’t the place for glitz and glamor. It’s not L.A., it’s not Atlanta. This is the place where the gladiators come and we’re gonna compete every day. Just hearing from him, he was receptive to that.”
In March, Wilson himself explained that it was the conversation with Heyward that helped sell him on the Steelers.
“We got to talk. And it was this cool experience of a guy who’s been at the top of his game for so long, but also a man who’s made a difference in a community,” Wilson said on March 15. “A guy who’s made a difference, not just in Pittsburgh, but around the country and just all the things he’s done.”
Steelers fans, what kind of campaign are you anticipating from Pittsburgh in 2024?
