An incoming freshman football player at the University of Hawaii was taken to a hospital in serious condition after injuring himself by diving off a wall at Waikiki Beach on Saturday.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports that Kalepo Naotala was hurt Saturday afternoon around 2:40 p.m. local time. Naotala hit his head when diving off a wall on the beach near the Kapahalu Groin.

Various media reports are painting a very scary picture. KITV reports that Naotala may end up being paralyzed as a result of the incident, with the case being called a spinal injury.

Naotala is an incoming freshman at Hawaii. The 19-year-old Virginian is part of Hawaii's 2017 recruiting class. He signed with Hawaii in 2016 but did not enroll at the school until January of this year after he finished healing from a knee injury.
