Do the Patriots have the NFL's best CB tandem?

Not known as a team that relies primarily on defense, the Patriots probably haven't had a duo this good on since 2001.

When you think of the teams with the best defense in the league, the Broncos, Seahawks, Texans, and Vikings probably come to mind.

While there's no arguing that those teams lead the league on defense, you might get away with suggesting that the Patriots' Stephon Gilmore and Malcolm Butler could be the best cornerback duo in the NFL right now.

That's the case Gilmore was making on  NFL Total Access.

"We just gotta go out there and prove ourselves every day; get better in practice you know?" Gilmore said. "Every year it starts over and we gotta be hungry. We gotta go out there and prove to everyone in the league that we can play the game at a high level so I think if we do that, everything else will speak for itself."

On March 9, 2017, Gilmore signed a five-year, $65 million contract with the New England Patriots.

While the Patriots have enjoyed the services of good cornerbacks in the past, it's been awhile since they had guys of this caliber. They made it to a Super Bowl in 2014 with Darrelle Revis and Brandon BrownerAqib Talib held down the fort with a complement of helpers in 2012 and 2013.

This season is unique for New England however, with both Gilmore (26) and Butler (27) in their primes. That's a luxury Belichick hasn't usually had during his tenure.

In fact, the last time New England had a pair like this on defense was probably back in 2001 with cornerback Ty Law (who was 27) and strong saftey Lawyer Milloy (28 at the time). They won a Super Bowl that season.

With Tom Brady and one of the best offenses in the league, a Patriots team with one of the the best cornerback pairs is something to cheer for in New England, and worry about everywhere else.
