ESPN: Steelers could overhaul QB department again
Are the Steelers going to make more major changes next year?
The Pittsburgh Steelers were among the teams who made notable offseason changes, completely remaking their quarterback department with the additions of Russell Wilson and Justin Fields while also trading Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles and allowing Mitchell Trubisky and Mason Rudolph to depart via free agency.
Pickett was reportedly traded after voicing opposition to the addition of Wilson, who was released from the Denver Broncos after two subpar seasons and a massive contract that was bought out.
Both Wilson and Fields are under contract for the upcoming 2024 season, and neither is extended (yet) beyond that. And while it remains to be seen whether or not the relationship between the Steelers and the two quarterbacks continue into 2025, NFL insider Dan Graziano believes that the Steelers could very well go right back to the drawing board at the end of the upcoming campaign.
“Not an overreaction. Look, Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, they have reason to believe, especially at the prices they got them, that it’s worth a shot,” Graziano said on GetUp on Monday. “However, it’s also possible, given what we’ve seen the last couple of years, that they get to the end of the season in Pittsburgh and neither of these guys is the long-term answer and they do something completely different next spring.”
“Each has signed for just this coming season, each has a lot to prove, and if neither proves it, then yes, the Steelers will be looking for another new quarterback next year,” he added.
Wilson certainly has much to prove in 2024, hoping to show his doubters that he can still resemble the quarterback that previously led the Seattle Seahawks to the Super Bowl and was regarded as one of the League's best at his position. But if that doesn't happen and he once again falters as he did in Denver, Steelers general manager Omar Kahn very well may be forced to start from scratch again.
