The Dallas Cowboys made a decision that rocked their fan base in the spring when they made the decision to cut superstar wide receiver Dez Bryant. The decision came as a major surprise not only due to the fact that Bryant was arguably one of the most dynamic offensive players to ever wear a Dallas Cowboys uniform, but also because he remains one of the most marketable personalities in the entire National Football League.
Bryant's production however had steadily begun to decline and considering how much money the Cowboys were investing in him season after season the decision to cut him made sense from a football perspective, assuming of course you can find another player worth investing that money into. That being said though it was made clear following the decision to cut Bryant from the team that his play on the field was not the only motivating factor in the decision. In fact, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones strongly hinted at the fact that Bryan't personality was a major contributing factor in the move as well.
"The other thing that we all see, and it is certainly visible to anyone who watches our games, watches our sideline, is Dez is certainly a fiery guy who plays with a lot of emotion both on and off the field," said Jones as per ESPN. "Sometimes that can be a distraction. It can be a distraction for Dez, it can be a distraction for other teammates. And we just have to really get our hands around when you put all the full body of work together where that's headed."
Those were some pretty harsh words from Jones, and they may in fact have severely deterred other franchises in the NFL from considering him as a viable option at wide receiver for fear that he could damage the chemistry in their locker room. Bryant is making things even harder for himself now with reports that the veteran wide receiver is insisting on signing a contract with a team that has a legitimate shot at contending for a spot in the Superbowl, something that would even further limit his potential options as a free agent.
That being said though, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has since come out and shared some kind words about Bryant, perhaps in an effort to find his longtime friend a new job.
"Dez is an NFL player," Jones said as per PFT. "There’s no doubt in my mind, and [he] can really contribute. It was best for us that we’re in the spot we’re in, but when I say us, it includes Dez. I believe that strongly.
"I love Dez. I spent a lot of time –- and inordinate amount of time with Dez –- but this is for the best. But he’s certainly good enough player that he can help people. He can help teams win games. I say that unequivocally. I believe that. Just look at our last few games and see if he made any plays against Oakland or anybody. He did."
Only time will tell where he ends up.
