Where is Martavis Bryant?
That’s a good question, one that fans, the media, and Steelers GM Kevin Colbert have been asking more and more lately.
The 25-year-old, 6’4, 211-lbs wide receiver was suspended by the NFL on March 14, 2016 for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. He was reinstated by the NFL on April 25th, 2017, but it is issues regarding his reinstatement that have kept him from starting training with the Steelers.
It may cost him a week or two, but at least Bryant seems to be back on board and following the rules.
The Steelers' General Manager had this to say regarding the situation:
“We did speak to [Bryant] once we were able to do that, and once he gets in here we’ll visit and try to extend his career and give him the opportunity to have the type of career he could have”.
Colbert was key to stress that the delay isn’t a concern, saying: “whenever they take care of the logistics of getting here and transferring back in and finding places to live and all that, that’s an individual by individual case. But at this time of the year we can’t mandate for those players to be here.”
While the exact cause of Bryant’s absence hasn’t been revealed, but there is a lengthy list of conditions and requirements that any player must meet before they are fully reinstated after breaching the NFL’s substance abuse policies.
The last-minute nature of his reinstatement is likely a major factor in Bryant’s delay in joining the Steelers.
It will be interesting to watch how he progresses once he does join the team, we will all be wondering if he can still the same player he was when he racked up 765 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns back in 2015.
