Second year quarterback Kenny Pickett will enter the 2023 season as the unquestioned starter for the Pittsburgh Steelers, one year after he came into camp as a rookie competing for a job along with Mitchell Trubisky and Mason Rudolph.
While there were some understandable growing pains in his first year that also included injury troubles, Pickett was able to rebound and lead the Steelers to the verge of a postseason spot. The experience will do wonders for him as he enters the new season as their starter.
According to offensive coordinator Matt Canada, who dealt with his fair share of criticisms last season, Pickett has been looking good so far.
“I think Kenny’s had a good spring. I think, obviously, every day is up and down when you play quarterback. Coach Tomlin says it best: this is football-like, not football. But I think [Pickett] is improving, he’s seeing things, playing fast, getting some time in with the guys,” Canada said to reporters, according to video via 93.7 The Fan’s Jeff Hathhorn. “Doing things he needs to do when you become the starter. Last year he was learning; we obviously had different situations. But I think Kenny is learning, and I’m excited about where he is.”
