Najee Harris gets honest about future with Steelers
Harris is entering the final year of his contract.
The Pittsburgh Steelers raised more than a few eyebrows when it was reported that they declined the 5th year contract option of All-Pro running back Najee Harris. Training camp has started, and he's set to enter the upcoming 2024 season without a contract beyond the upcoming campaign, leading to justifiable speculation regarding his future with the team.
For Harris, he admitted that he was "disappointed for a minute" but that it's not something that he can spend time sitting and sulking about. Harris, who has averaged 3.9 yards per carry on his 834 career carries, is keeping his focus on the present.
"I was disappointed for a minute, but it's nothing really where me sitting around being disappointed for too long will do anything to help me out," Harris said as the Steelers open training camp. "I think that it is what it is. You've got to keep pushing, and knowing that coming out here and doing what's best for the team and having a good year is what's most important right now."
Harris, whom the Steelers selected in the 2021 NFL Draft out of Alabama, has racked up an impressive 3,269 rushing yards along with 22 rushing touchdowns, 866 receiving yards, and six receiving touchdowns. He was also named to the Pro Bowl in 2021.
He reiterated that his preference is to remain with the Steelers, and that he has no problems with motivation as he enters a critical juncture in his career.
"I don't need somebody to tell me what I can and can't do," he said. "That doesn't motivate me or anything. I've already had my motivation since I was a kid. It's nothing new to me. I've been in this spotlight and this position pretty much all my life, ever since I was a kid. This is nothing new just more cameras and interviews and questions."
