A veteran playmaker will soon find a new home in the NFL.

The Detroit Lions announced on Friday that they have released veteran tight end Brandon Pettigrew from the NFI list (non-football injury).

Pettigrew was durable for most of his career, and started 85 of his 93 games across seven seasons in the NFL. However, he suffered an ACL tear last December which forced him to begin the 2016 campaign watching from the sidelines.

He saw his role with the Lions decrease, as 2014 first round pick Eric Ebron emerged as an impact player atop the tight end depth chart. This transaction indicates that Pettigrew is now fully healthy and ready for an opportunity to hit the field. His proven experience will likely draw interest on the open market.

The 31-year-old will first be subject to waivers, as he was released after the trade deadline had passed.

The former first round pick in 2009 had his most productive season in 2011, when he racked up 83 receptions for 777 yards and five touchdowns across 16 starts.
