Long time Packers' fans will know that Packers legend Bart Starr has been struggling with health issues ever since he suffered a major stroke back in 2014, but that did not make the blow from today's news any softer.

According to a tragic announcement from the Green Bay Packers organization, the legendary Packers quarterback has died today in Birmingham, Alabama. Starr is of course arguably the greatest quarterback in the history of the Green Bay Packers organization, one of its greatest players at any position to be frank, and he was 85 years old when he passed away.

Starr will best be remembered for his dominance at the quarterback position, becoming the first ever player at his position to win 5 National Football League championships and of course being arguably the brightest star, no pun intended, in arguably the greatest game in Green Bay Packers history the Ice Bowl. His place in the Hall of Fame is of course more than well deserved and although he is gone, there he will be enshrined forever.

Unsurprisingly the Packers have released a statement to commentate the passing of Starr:

“The Packers Family was saddened today to learn of the passing of Bart Starr,” said Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy via the team's official website. “A champion on and off the field, Bart epitomized class and was beloved by generations of Packers fans. A clutch player who led his team to five NFL titles, Bart could still fill Lambeau Field with electricity decades later during his many visits. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Cherry and the entire Starr family.”

In the more modern era of the National Football League both Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre may stand out as the most popular Packers in the history of the franchise, but for those who witnessed Starr's quarterback sneak on Dec 31st 1967 there will never be anyone who will replace him. At this time our thoughts go out to every member of the Packers fan base that is grieving at the loss, but most importantly to the Starr family who have struggled with Starr's ailing health in recent years. I hope they can take some solace in knowing that Starr can now finally rest.

Update: The family has also released a statement and we would like to share it with you.
