After over a decade toiling with the forever hapless Detroit Lions, quarterback Matthew Stafford was traded prior to last season to the Los Angeles Rams in a highly publicized trade that sent quarterback Jared Goff back the other way to Detroit.
All Stafford did was lead the Rams to the Super Bowl in his first season in Hollywood, and he certainly is enjoying life as a reigning champion. However, the start of this upcoming campaign has been a bit difficult for Stafford, who is experiencing "abnormal" discomfort in his elbow, similar to what MLB pitchers experience.
“Want to try to have him operate in as little pain as possible,” Rams head coach Sean McVay said of Stafford. “I think anytime that you’ve played as long and are as tough as he is, I don’t know if you’re ever truly pain-free, but the goal would be for Sept. 8, and really looking toward 17 games, then hopefully some games after that, if we earn that opportunity. That’s kind of the perspective and the big-picture approach that we want to be able to take. I don’t know that I would feel as comfortable taking that approach if it wasn’t for the experience that he’s accumulated.”
Last season, Stafford threw for for 4,886 yards and 41 touchdowns.
