The Pats have a history of this...
Jimmy Garoppolo is the hottest backup quarterback in the league, which means his next contract negotiations will be very interesting.
Right now, Garoppolo is saying all the right things as the team heads into offseason workouts. “We'll cross that bridge when we get there, I guess” said the young quarterback. Amid rumours of an offseason trade to the Cleveland Browns, the Patriots shot down any rumours that he was being shopped around. The problem will be if the Patriots decide they can’t afford to pay a backup quarterback over 20 million dollars per year. That’s around how much the quarterback would cost if the Pats decided to place the franchise tag on him. Recent Patriots history suggests that they could place the franchise tag on the youngster next season but then trade him like they did Matt Cassel in 2009.
A new contract would fetch Garoppolo around the same money but the Patriots would be tied to him for a longer term. The franchise tag is a one year designation. The Patriots 2018 offseason will be very interesting!
