This would have been big.

It's been anything but an easy season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who initially began the calendar new year by thinking that they would need a new quarterback after the ageless Tom Brady finally announced his retirement.

However, that retirement lasted literally a few weeks before he decided that he'd be returning - a decision that was a major factor in his marriage breaking up.

The Bucs were nearly aided by the return of another multiple Super Bowl winner who has been joined to Brady at the hip for years now - Rob Gronkowski.

According to head coach Todd Bowles, Gronkowski contacted the team recently about a potential return to action, though he would ultimately make the decision to stay in retirement.

“It was more of a conversation than anything else,” Bowles said. “Usually, when you have to think about playing, you probably don’t want to play. When it’s just a discussion, I didn’t think much of it at the time.”

Despite a 6-8 record, the Bucs still somehow lead the NFC South.
