Russell Wilson compared to Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger
Accurate comparison?
It was a long and very fruitful NFL career for Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who spent last 18 years wearing the black and yellow while leading his team to two Super Bowl wins. He's also the franchise leader in wins with 165, home wins with 92, and passing touchdowns with 418.
His heir to the starting quarterback position Kenny Pickett didn't deliver the results that the franchise was envisioning, and they shipped him in a stunning trade earlier this year to the in-state rival Philadelphia Eagles. And in his stead, former Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson has arrived.
And while the move has garnered varying responses, one particular analyst believes that he's seeing some of Roethlisberger in Wilson so far.
The Athletic's Mark Kaboly made an appearance on Pittsburgh's 93.7 The Fan, and made the comparison:
"He was pretty accurate with some deep balls there. Tight spirals, very accurate. He was to that point where Ben [Roethlisberger] was later in his career, where he threw to a spot, threw to get guys open. That’s just veteran, that’s being around throwing 20,000 balls in your career where you can throw guys open a lot," Kaboly said. "You can tell that Russell Wilson has a lot of those characteristics.”
While Wilson has a long way to go before he can be accurately compared to Roethlisberger in Steelers lore, he hopes to make the most of his extremely team-friendly one year contract at the veteran minimum of less than $2 million.
