Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end Cam Heyward didn't make Pro Bowl, and that had a lot of people shaking their heads.
Heyward has 10 sacks and is enjoying the best season of his seven-year career. If ever there was a time when he would be recognized as one of the best players at his position this was it, noted the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
But when the NFL announced the 2018 Pro Bowl rosters Tuesday night Heyward was not among the NFL-high eight Steelers named.
“Obviously, I care,” Heyward said. “You want to be recognized, but it’s not my choice. I’m just worried about football. I’ll focus on that and get back to business.”
“I’m so happy for all the guys that made it, especially my linemen, always proud of them,” quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said. “I just really thought — and I know there are always snubs and everyone wants to talk about it, and I hate talking about that — but I really felt Cam Heyward deserved it. I thought he should have definitely been in there.”
The AFC Pro Bowl defensive ends were Joey Bosa of the Los Angeles Chargers; Calais Campbell of the Jaguars; and Khalil Mack of the Raiders.
Heyward was asked if he thinks 3-4 defensive ends should be grouped with interior linemen in the future.
“I don’t make the decisions,” Heyward said. “I’m not going to get into that. They’ll do whatever they think is best. I’m not the first and won’t be the last [to be snubbed]. I’m moving on. I can be [ticked] off all I want, but at the end of the day, I’ve got football to play.”
