The San Francisco 49ers are in full on rebuild mode and new coach Kyle Shanahan and General Manager John Lynch are starting under center.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, 49ers starting quarterback Colin Kaepernick is opting out of his current contract and will become an unrestricted free agent. The move will not be official until March. 2, but team management will not veto Kaepernick's decision.

Kaepernick and the 49ers restructured his contract last fall, so that he could regain the starting job from Blaine Gabbert. He also had to give up $14.5 million in injury guarantees in exchange to hit the open market. His original contract was set to run through 2020, and the Niners could still sign him if they so desire.

Kaepernick did have a decent season on a very poor San Francisco squad, throwing 16 touchdowns and just four interceptions in 12 games.

He will likely have a number of team vying for his services.
