Dominant defensive lines in the NFL usually have one thing in common, the “war daddy”. Guys like Khalil Mack, J.J. Watt, Von Miller, the keystones that hold everything in place.
The question for this year’s Dallas Cowboys, is who is going to be that guy?
Demarcus Lawrence perhaps? Cedric Thornton or Tyrone Crawford?
According to NFL Total Access, the Cowboys best bet might be one of their rookies.
Citing the magic that Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli can consistently get out of his players, it may not be too much of a long shot to expect a breakout from Taco Charlton in his rookie season.
Your best defensive player should be able to sow havoc up front, and be just as dangerous one both the running and passing game. Charlton looks like he has the chops to be that kind of versatile player, if he can perform at the top level consistently.
With Marinelli pushing him, Charlton could end up being the most important single piece on the Cowboys defense.
Except for one other obvious candidate.
Linebacker Sean Lee might have something to say about Charlton’s possible status as defensive MVP. Entering his 7th season in the NFL with the Cowboys, Lee has been one of the Cowboys best defensive assets over the last few seasons. Consistency is key, and Lee provides just that.
We'll get a real feel for what Charlton can do once the pads are on for training camp.
