911 audio reveals cause of tragic death of Dwayne Haskins
This adds to the tragedy.
The sports world experienced a stunning loss earlier this month, as former Ohio State Buckeyes and Pittsburgh Steelers QB Dwayne Haskins was killed after being struck by a dump truck while walking on Interstate 595 in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Haskins was pronounced dead at the scene; he was only 24 years of age.
And now, the 911 phone call which was recently released confirms more tragic details of the shocking incident. Haskins was running across the highway to retrieve gas after his car had run out.
“I’m calling because my husband is stuck on the side of the highway. He had to go walk and get gas, and then he said he was returning to the car on the highway,” a woman who said she was his wife, Kalabrya Haskins, told an emergency operator. “We were on the phone, he said he was going to call me back after he finished putting the gas in.
“I kept calling and calling and he wasn’t answering, and eventually – I continued to call him, the phone eventually cut off, and it’s not working now. I have his location, and I just want someone to go in the area and see if his car is there and if he’s okay and if anything happened to him,” she said. “That’s just not right for him not to call me back and his phone to go dead, and he’s just stranded by himself.”
Haskins was set to enter his 4th NFL season this year. During his redshirt sophomore year with the Buckeyes in 2018, he set multiple records, including for single-season passing yards (4,831), touchdown passes (50) and total offensive yards (4,939).
