In 2021, Britt Reid, son of Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, got behind the wheel after consuming alcohol. He hit 2 vehicles that were stopped on the side of the highway. Several people came out injured, including Ariel Young, a 5-year-old girl who suffered a traumatic brain injury.
Today, NBC Philadelphia reported that former Chiefs assistant coach pleaded guilty in front of a judge. He admitted to driving drunk the night of the accident. A police investigation had previously proven that his blood alcohol level was at 0.113 two hours after the accident.
“The five victims of this crime are outraged the prosecuting attorney is not seeking maximum sentence allowable by law. The defendant is a prior offender whose actions caused a 5-year-old girl to be in a coma and seriously injured three others.”
-Tom Porto, attorney representing Ariel's family
Knowing the consequences, the 37-year-old faces 7 years in prison. He will stand trial on September 26 and will receive his sentence on October 28. In pleading guilty, the deal was to try to get the accused only 4 years in prison for good behaviour.
The Chiefs organization have come to a confidential arrangement with the young Young's family to cover medical care.
He was a remorseful man who took the stand this morning.
“I really regret what I did. I made a huge mistake. I apologize to the family. I didn't mean to hurt anyone.”
-Britt Reid
