Important details released on Dak Prescott's surgery

He's on the shelf for the next several weeks.

The Dallas Cowboys will be without the services of quarterback Dak Prescott for the next several weeks, as he's undergone surgery on his thumb following an injury in their Week 1 setback to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Prescott suffered the setback when he hit the hand of outside linebacker Shaq Barrett while throwing a pass during Sunday's game.

Subsequent X-Rays would show that Prescott suffered a fracture after he initially believed it was simply a case of having jammed his thumb. The surgery, which was successful, included the insertion of a plate and screws in order to stabilize the ailment.

Per ESPN's Ed Werner on Twitter:

"Cowboys QB Dak Prescott required a plate and screws to repair and stabilize fracture near right thumb. Among the reasons he’s not being placed on IR is to allow the flexibility to have him to eventually take practice reps as he gets closer to a potential return to play."

The Cowboys are currently in preparations for their Week 2 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals at AT&T Stadium; backup Cooper Rush is expected to get the start.
