Jerry Jones had a message for Dak Prescott after last season's gruesome injury

Take a look at what the enigmatic Cowboys owner and GM had to say after his QB's season ended last year.

It was a horrifying scene for Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, who suffered a season-ending compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle on October 11 of last season at AT&T Stadium.

Prescott was carted off the field, visibly emotional as he received a police hand from the fans who were in attendance. And while the fans and even players can be excused for wondering the status of Prescott's future in the Lone Star state, enigmatic team owner and GM Jerry Jones wasn't one of them.

In fact, it was Jones who assured Prescott that his future with the Cowboys was secure.

“Of course, immediately just bled for him when you saw his expressions and then of course immediately I went down to the dressing room and saw him there,” Jones said. “I knew for whatever I didn’t have any idea, frankly the true nature of the injury. But I knew to the extent that anything was going through his head about the future I wanted to really reassure him that our future is together in the locker room.”

And Jones made good on his word, as he and Prescott hammered out a contract extension just months later that made him the second highest player in NFL history at the time of the deal. And Jones had no qualms about the length of the deal or the terms, despite the injury.

“It’s not the kind of thing that’s fresh on your mind, but I thought it could be under the circumstances,” Jones said about the Prescott’s future at the time. “I felt like at least I wanted him to see me there and making sure this was not that type of situation.”

All Prescott has done since his return to the field is make good on his team's investment. Through the first four weeks of the 2021 campaign, Prescott has led the Cowboys to the top record in the NFC East at 3-1. He's done so while being ranked second overall in the NFL in completion percentage and touchdown passes while clocking in with the 7th highest QB rating.
