Jerry Jones sounds off on potential 2nd Dallas NFL team

Did they really think this was a possibility?

There are several cities in the United States that have two professional franchises of the same sport playing in the same metropolitan area, including Chicago being home to both the Cubs and White Sox of Major League Baseball and Los Angeles being home to the Lakers/Clippers of the NBA as well as Rams/Chargers of the NFL. Meanwhile, New York boasts a bevy of teams, including the Yankees/Mets of Major League Baseball, the Rangers/Islanders of the NHL, and Knicks/Mets of the NBA. We also can't forget about the Giants/Jets of the NFL.

Could Dallas become home to a second NFL franchise? According to the city's lead official, it should happen. Dallas mayor Eric Johnson has stated his hope that should the NFL expand, the Cowboys shouldn't be the only professional football team in town.

“The answer is Dallas,” Johnson tweeted. “Why? We are about to pass the Chicago metro and become the #3 metro in the US, which would make us the largest US metro WITHOUT 2 teams. Football is king here. Dallas needs an expansion team, and we would be able to sustain 2 NFL teams better than LA or NY.”

However, not surprisingly, the owner of the Cowboys is pushing back on any potential 2nd NFL team in his city.

“Well, I like the mayor,” Jones told The Dallas Morning News. “I like him personally, but he doesn’t have the depth. He doesn’t have the knowledge that others have regarding how unique Dallas is and how we enjoy the interest in the Cowboys. He wouldn’t want to water that down as it relates to Dallas if he knew as much, and has spent as much time in sports as I have.”

Jones then confirmed that the NFL had no plans to add a 2nd Dallas team.

“That’s correct,” Jones said. “That is correct. And you just said it. You can be rest assured that you would not have the NFL supporting another team because of the kind of value that the game and the NFL receives of having [the] Dallas Cowboys as one of its marquee teams and again, logic tells you [the NFL] wouldn’t want to water that down.”
