JuJu Smith-Schuster has a departing message for Steelers fans
He's saying goodbye to the fans.
Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster made the decision to depart the Steel City and take his talents to the heartland, inking a contract with Kansas City Chiefs. The deal is for one year deal worth a reported $10.75 million.
Of course, the Chiefs attempted to sway Smith-Schuster to come to Kansas City last offseason before he ultimately decided he'd be returning to the Steelers. He'd finish the season on the shelf after suffering an injury in Week 5; he amassed 15 catches for 129 yards. While playing in five seasons with Pittsburgh, he racked up 3,855 yards and 26 touchdowns on 323 catches.
However, as a proper sendoff to Steelers fans, he held a fundraiser at Pittsburgh's Strip District Terminal along Smallman Street, with all proceeds being donated to local organizations like Paws Across Pittsburgh Animal Rescue and Magee-Women's Research Institute.
"It was just very important. It was huge to come back," Smith-Schuster said. "I spent five years here, to come back to the city where I started my career. When you sign and go to a new team, you move so fast, that I literally picked up all my stuff and moved. I didn't have time to say bye to the fans. What we're doing today is really cool."
He also took the time to sign autographs and pose for pictures with the many fans who showed up.
"Steelers fans, they're always loyal no matter where you go," Smith-Schuster said. "I have so many Steelers fans but I also have so many JuJu fans. Being here, it shows. I thought I was going to have like a hundred people. I think about 400 people are here, plus, and the line is still going."
