Superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the rest of the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs are left picking up the pieces after their stunning Week 1 loss at Arrowhead Stadium to the upstart Detroit Lions, who were able to grind out a 21-20 win on the same night that the Chiefs received their championship rings and raised their title banner.

The Chiefs weren't aided by several dropped passes along with a pick-six from Mahomes, as well as the abscess of Travis Kelce (leg injury) and Chris Jones (contract holdout).

After the game, Mahomes spoke frankly and said that the setback in front of a packed home venue left them all with a bad feeling.

"It’s embarrassing for me to lose any time," he said.

"Like I said after the ring ceremony, I’ve moved on to the next season," he continued. "Obviously, it’s cool for the fans to be able to see the banner and drop in at Arrowhead Stadium. But this is a whole new year, and I think I know that, and we are trying to win another Super Bowl, and this is obviously not the way we wanted to start. So any time I lose, I’m embarrassed. So I’m going to try to get better so I don’t lose more as the season goes on."

It just goes to show that this is why the games are played on the field rather than on paper, where the Chiefs were listed as 6.5 point favorites.

Kansas City is getting ready to get back in action next week when they take on the Jacksonville Jaguars from the Sunshine State.
