Steelers announce key decision on QB Justin Fields
This is one that will have Steelers fans talking.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have already made two significant moves at the quarterback position, signing Russell Wilson and also trading Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles. Not long afterward, they acquired Justin Fields in a trade with the Chicago Bears.
However, the team has reportedly decided not to pick up the 5th year, $25 million option on Fields' contract, meaning that the can become a free agent after the upcoming season.
According to head coach Mike Tomlin, Fields will have a chance to compete for the starter's role alongside Wilson, who signed for the NFL veteran minimum salary and can also become a free agent after the season.
"We’re not resistant to competition, but as I’ve mentioned several times of late, I just think it’s appropriate to establish positioning. . . . and the term that I’ve used is Russell has pole position," Tomlin said. "And why do I use that term? Because during this time where we are not formally working, I just think it’s beneficial. His experience in the National Football League, his process has been honed and perfected."
