Are the Pittsburgh Steelers on the verge of making a major acquisition? Right now, it appears that way in the mind of Steelers insider Mark Kaboly of The Athletic in order to bolster the wide receiver position.
In addition to having drafted Roman Wilson in Round 3 of this year's NFL Draft, the Steelers have also brought aboard the likes of Van Jefferson, Quez Watkins, and Scotty Miller to work with No. 1 wideout George Pickens. But there still remains concern about the strength of the position.
According to Kaboly, the Steelers are currently working with a group of "middle of the road" receivers at the WR2 position:
“It’s easy to just go with Russell Wilson and how he has quickly captured the attention of the city, but that’s not a surprise. The surprise is that the Steelers seem perfectly satisfied watching how the WR2 position plays out in camp among a host of middle-of-the-road receivers. Van Jefferson, Quez Watkins, Calvin Austin III, Scotty Miller, Denzel Mims, Marquez Callaway and Dez Fitzpatrick all have varying degrees of experience behind George Pickens.”
He then indicated that a "big swing" sounds like it could be "imminent" for the Steelers:
“Whether they address the position before the season could hinge on the play of rookie Roman Wilson. But the entire group has been underwhelming enough that a big swing appears imminent.”
With Training Camp officially set to begin just over a month from now, the Steelers would be wise to get going on this alleged potential major acquisition in order to be able to hit the ground running when the real work starts.
