The Denver Broncos have traded away one of the most recognizable figures on their roster over the last several years.
According to a breaking news report from National Football League insider Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Broncos are currently working on finalizing a trade deal that will send eight time Pro Bowl linebacker Von Miller to the Los Angeles Rams.
Schefter is citing league sources for this report and adds that he believes the return for the Broncos will be what he describes as "two second-day 2022 draft picks." We are still awaiting more clarification on those draft picks and will bring you those details when they become available.
This truly marks the end of an era for the Denver Broncos. Not only has Miller been one of the most dominant defensive players in recent history, he currently has more sacks than any other active player in the league, but he has been a core member of the Broncos franchise for several seasons. Prior to today's news, Miller was the last remaining non special teams player from the roster that defeated the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50, a Super Bowl where Miller was named Most Valuable Player. The decision to trade him today has seemingly closed that chapter of Broncos history, as the team is looking to move forward into the future.
In March of this year the Broncos made the decision to exercise the 2021 option in Miller's contract. This meant that Miller was playing out the final year of his deal with the Broncos, and this may simply be a case of the team seeking to get some kind of return for the veteran outside linebacker before he walks away as a free agent at the end of the season.
I suspect that this news will not be particularly well received by fans in the Denver area, Miller was not only a popular figure on the field but also did great work in the community with programs like Von's Vision.
Update: Schefter has provided more information on the draft picks:
Update: The Broncos are also covering the majority of Miller's remaining salary.
