Sean Payton is coming back to the National Football League as a head coach.
According to a report from ESPN insider Adam Schefter:
"Saints and Broncos are finalizing compensation in return for Super Bowl-winning HC Sean Payton, sources tell ESPN. This clears the way for Payton to sign with the Broncos to become Denver’s next head coach.
And so Payton is expected to head to Denver as its next HC."
The official compensation is that the New Orleans Saints will be receiving Denver's 2023 1st round draft pick and their 2024 2nd round draft pick; Denver receives New Orleans' 2024 3rd round pick.
Prior to his retirement, Payton had been head coach of the Saints since his hiring in 2006, and led the team to the Super Bowl XLIV championship. He's also led them to eight playoff berths and six NFC South titles.
Payton alluded to a potential return to the NFL at some point, though wouldn't give any specifics.
“I still have a vision for doing things in football,” Payton said in his farewell Saints press conference. “And I’ll be honest with you, that might be coaching again at some point. I don’t think it’s this year, but I think maybe in the future.”
He'll be taking over a Broncos team that underwent a horrific season in 2022, with a particularly brutal performance from 1st year Denver quarterback Russell Wilson.
