So far, so good for the Pittsburgh Steelers in preseason play. They earned their first victory of the non-official season last night in Tampa Bay, defeating the Buccaneers thanks to strong play from quarterbacks Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph. Ultimately, the Steelers would put 27 points on the scoreboard compared to the Bucs 17.
Additionally, Anthony McFarland Jr. scored a touchdown while rushing for 18 yards on three carries, while Calvin Austin III caught two passes for 73 yards and a touchdown.
For head coach Mike Tomlin, he was quick to single out the play of a pair of rookies in Nick Herbig and Keeanu Benton when talking about what he liked in the game.
“Calvin Austin [III], Ant[hony] Mc[Farland Jr.], [Nick] Herbig on defense, [Keeanu] Benton on defense were young guys that I thought stood out”, Tomlin said.
He also stated that as with all young players, there are learning curves and always room for improvement.
“There’s a lot of teaching and learning that needs to happen based on the result of what just happened”, Tomlin continued. “It just is. I think it’s reasonable to expect us to be significantly better next week”.
The Steelers will play their first home preseason game next Saturday when they welcome the Buffalo Bills to Acrisure Stadium.
